Goals and Expectations

Exposure to high quality clinical outcomes research.

Option to obtain a Master's of Science in Clinical Research degree (MSCR), pending acceptance into the program and funding.

Demonstrate proficiency with study design, execution, and presentation.

Proficiency with navigating the peer-review process, both in terms of critical appraisal of literature as well as through writing and submission of original scientific articles.
Duration

Options for either 12 or 24 month experiences.

Prerequisite Training/Selection Criteria.

Completion of a minimum of three years of general surgery residency training.
Certification

Research Responsibilities
-
Completion of ~1 project/manuscript monthly.

Presentation of original research at institutional, regional, and national meetings.

Maintain research project log.
-
Organize visiting lectureship annually with associated research symposium.

Mentor and collaborate with students and residents.
Clinical/Patient Care Responsibilities
-
Night call coverage once/week, one weekend/month.
-
Morning rounds with the team following call night.

Operative volume and complexity will be gradually increased to a level commensurate with the trainee's abilities.
Didactic Teaching Conferences
-
Monthly research meetings.

Annual Division of Pediatric Surgery Grand Rounds.

Possible Department of Surgery Grand Rounds.

Option to attend weekly educational conferences as a fellow level participant.
Supervision and Evaluation
-
Weekly meetings with core faculty, including Dr. Matthew S. Clifton, Fellowship Program Director.
