Kenneth Cardona invited to serve on SPORE Review Panel
JANUARY 2022
Kenneth Cardona, MD, Patricia R. Reynolds Professor in Sarcoma, Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology, and Sarcoma Disease Team Leader of Winship Cancer Institute, has been invited to serve on the Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) Review Panel for 2021.
SPOREs are sponsored by the Translational Research Program (TRP) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and are designed to enable the rapid and efficient movement of basic scientific findings into clinical settings, as well as to determine the biological basis for observations made in individuals with cancer or in populations at risk for cancer.
Each SPORE focuses on a specific organ site, such as breast or lung cancer, or on a group of highly related cancers, such as gastrointestinal cancers. This particular SPORE will concentrate on a cluster of eleven applications proposing translational studies in the areas of sarcomas, lung cancer, rectal cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, neuroendocrine tumors, and KRAS-mutated cancers.
Dr. Cardona leads national research efforts in the study of sarcoma as the chair of the ECOG-ACRIN Sarcoma Working Group and as principal investigator of the United States Sarcoma Collaborative. Internationally, he is an active member of the multi-institutional Transatlantic Australasian Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Working Group and Desmoid Working Group. Additionally, he is on the editorial board of the soft tissue sarcoma section of Annals of Surgical Oncology, Journal of Surgical Oncology, and Oncology.
His extensive research experience combined with his clinical expertise in the management of retroperitoneal/abdominal sarcomas and soft tissue sarcomas of the trunk and limb will make him a valuable member of the SPORE panel as it evaluates the sarcoma studies most deserving of funding.
Due to the current status of the COVID-19 outbreak, the panel has been scheduled as a Webex teleconference on February 22nd and 23rd, 2022.
