Cardiothoracic Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship

OVERVIEW

Cardiothoracic surgery is an increasingly complex surgical subspecialty that requires highly skilled clinical teams to achieve optimal results and outcomes. While advanced practice providers (APPs), such as physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs), have become essential members of these teams, standardized APP training programs beyond traditional NP and PA primary care-focused education are not widely available. To meet this need, the Emory Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery has established a formal training program in cardiothoracic surgery for APPs that provides a more comprehensive, diverse, and efficient educational experience than traditional on-the-job training.

The official mission of the Emory Cardiothoracic Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship is to educate and train certified APPs so that they will have the knowledge and skill required to provide the highest quality clinical and surgical care for cardiothoracic surgery patients. This purpose is driven by the desire to produce clinicians who are completely dedicated to improving the quality and longevity of patients' lives. We also plan to advance and solidify the important role APPs have in cardiothoracic surgery teams, and to develop their ability to contribute to the advancement of cardiothoracic surgery.

VALUES

At the program's core are the principles of excellence, diligence, dedication, and humility. We strive to exhibit these values in our daily actions and clinical practice, and are committed to instilling these values in our trainees.

Excellence

We strive for complete excellence, and are committed to continuous improvement in both the care of our patients and the education of our fellows.

Diligence

Our passion for cardiothoracic surgery is unwavering. We promote our profession tirelessly, studiously, and with perseverance. This drive benefits our patients and our students, and reinforces and renews our devotion to scholarship.

Dedication

We are steadfast in our mission, vision, and values, and have deep allegiance to the scholarship of cardiothoracic surgery. We exercise this dedication through excellent patient care, vast knowledge and understanding of associated disease processes, and dissemination of that clinical and pathological knowledge through our educational endeavors.

Humility

Two of the most honored relationships are those between a patient/clinician and a student/teacher. We are humbled by the trust that our patients and students place in us and cherish the opportunity to be a part of their lives and stories.

GOALS

By hosting the program, we hope to accomplish the following:

  • To teach newly graduated APPs and those transitioning from other sub-specialties the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of both common and atypical cardiac disease processes and conditions.

  • To inspire the desire to assimilate the clinical and surgical skills necessary to provide the highest level of patient care for cardiac surgical patients.

  • To expand and advance the role of the NP and the PA within cardiothoracic surgery while providing a paradigm of that expanded role for other institutions to adopt.

  • To nurture the leadership qualities and aspirations of advance practice providers so that they will engage in leadership activities within the discipline on institutional, local, state, and national levels.

  • To expand cardiothoracic surgery's clinical and surgical knowledge base through surgical innovation and research initiatives.
