Division of Surgical Oncology

operating room

Our surgical oncologists provide multi-modality evaluation and surgical treatment as members of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, Emory's cross-disciplinary cancer treatment, prevention, and research center and Georgia's first and only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center.

Dr. Charles Staley has been chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology since 1995. He coordinates national efforts for clinical cancer research as a principle investigator for clinical trials for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group; as chair of the Vizient UHC Cancer Center Network Steering Committee, which oversees a national network of approximately 125 cancer centers nationally; and as co-principal investigator of the Winship Cancer Institute location of the National Cancer Institute's National Clinical Trials Network.

There is an emphasis at Winship on research that can be translated to clinical work, giving patients quick access to new therapies and the opportunity to participate in unique clinical trials. Under the Winship banner, our surgical oncology faculty engage in basic science and clinical research studies of cancer prevention and experimental treatments, molecular therapy, immunology, and genetics.

General surgery residents can participate in the division's clinical and research endeavors during their first, second, third, and chief years. The division also offers a one-year, Society of Surgical Oncology-approved breast oncology fellowship.
