Overview: Training Now for the Future

Fostered in an environment where teaching and learning flourish and permeable disciplinary boundaries encourage integrated education, research, and scholarship, our training programs combine to create one of the largest and most versatile academic centers in the Emory University School of Medicine.

Training in the Department of Surgery is presided over by our eminent faculty, propelled by state of the art treatment technologies, and nourished by clinical programs that are typically high volume referral sevices that are often ranked in the upper tiers of their particular specialties.

As our progressive initiatives in simulation-based training, self-selected curriculum, and web-based education move forward, our stature as a valuable source of surgical discovery, innovation, and practice continues to grow. We have achieved such markers of success as consistent placement in the upper ranks of departments of surgery nationwide in annual NIH funding, with several of our researchers regularly appearing in the NIH's surgery PIs listings; increasing numbers of our faculty receiving extramural funding and authoring high impact publications; and significant faculty representation in nationally recognized medical, surgical, and scientific organizations.

All of these factors combine to energize our mission to train exceptional doctors and surgical scientists for the 21st century.
