Our faculty surgeons are the surgical staff of the Winship Cancer Institute, Georgia's only NCI Designated Cancer Center, and treat such conditions as adrenal masses, biliary tumors, breast cancer and tumors, colon and rectal cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, head and neck cancer, liver cancer and tumors, melanoma, pancreatic cancer, sarcoma and skin cancer at Emory University Hospital, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Grady Memorial Hospital and the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Available procedures include radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors, oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery, sentinel node biopsy, laparoscopic pancreatectomy and many others.

As an NCI-designated center, Winship joins an elite group of cancer centers nationwide that are on the forefront of the battle against cancer. The designation benefits patients through increased access to new clinical trials and technologies. Emory's Breast Imaging Center and departments of medical oncology and radiation oncology are also affiliated with Winship.

At Winship's Breast Health Center, which offers centralized services for breast cancer care, our surgical oncologists focus on breast conservation and reconstruction, an approach influenced by such Emory surgeons as Dr. Maurice Jurkiewicz, chief of plastic surgery from 1971-1992, who with his associates developed many of the techniques for reconstructive breast surgery that are now used internationally. Division surgeons perform neoadjuvant chemotherapy, making breast sparing possible; skin-sparing mastectomy, preserving the patient's breast skin for use in reconstruction; and oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery, a collaborative procedure performed by Emory surgical oncologists and plastic surgeons that allows patients to avoid mastectomy.

Dr. Sheryl Gabram directs the AVON Comprehensive Breast Center, a Georgia Cancer Center of Excellence, at Grady Memorial Hospital. The center is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary breast care program dedicated to expanding breast health care for medically under-served women in metropolitan Atlanta. It offers a full spectrum of clinical and support services, including screening, diagnosis, treatment, counseling and laboratory research.
