Clinical Synopsis

The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Emory has developed into a regional center for the treatment of dento-facial jaw deformities and temporomandibular disorders (TMJ). Division faculty perform perform a wide variety of diagnostic, inpatient, and outpatient services including orthognathic surgery, microsurgical repair following peripheral trigeminal nerve injury, dentoalveolar surgery and removal of wisdom teeth, surgical and non-surgical treatment of TMJ, bone grafting and dental implant insertion, treatment of maxillofacial trauma, surgery for sleep apnea, and treatment of congenital and acquired facial deformities.

Research Synopsis

Dr. Gary Bouloux is the division's Director of Research, and is currently investigating the effects of thiazolidinediones on human bone marrow stromal cell differentiation capacity in vivo; the role of psychological factors in recovery from arthroscopy and arthroplasty for temporomandibular joint disorders; and is Emory's principal investigator in a multicenter comparison of corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid, and placebo during arthrocentesis for the management of temporomandibular joint disorders.

Other research efforts by faculty include the compiling of a TMJ data repository, open versus closed treatment of subcondylar fracture, and the development of virtual surgery programs for facial reconstruction.
