green arrow Dr. Jeffrey Nicholas was appointed to the Competency and Testing Subcommittee of the Committee for Acute Care Surgery, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
green arrow Dr. Jeffrey Salomone was the recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation from the National First Aid Science Advisory Board of the American Red Cross/American Heart Association, 11/2005. Over the course of one year, Dr. Salomone — representing the ACS Committee on Trauma — sat on the board, which worked to establish evidence-based recommendations for lay persons performing first aid.
green arrow Dr. Thomas Vassiliades received the President's 2005 Award for Best Scientific Paper at the annual meeting of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.

The Department Rates High in NIH Awarded Research Grant Rankings
Rankings released from the National Institutes of Health placed the department among the leaders in the nation in terms of federal research grant support for 2004, underscoring the advancements that have been made at Emory in transplantation and vascular biology, endovascular surgery, the surgical correction of gastrointestinal anomalies, vascular and biomaterials investigations, multimodality approaches to cancer treatment, islet transplantation, and rapid ultrasound assessment and team approaches to trauma surgery and burn care.

ESTAR Researchers Present Study Findings at Medicine Meets Virtual Reality Conference
ESTAR-associated researchers had a high-profile presence at the January 2005 Medicine Meets Virtual Reality (MMVR) conference. Current and former Emory faculty from a variety of medical disciplines, including surgery, urology and cardiology, presented study findings at the session entitled "Simulation Applied: VR to OR; A Review of Projects in Surgical Simulation." MMVR is a premier forum for scientists, physicians, engineers and clinicians who develop, refine and promote advanced, data-centered tools for clinical care and medical education.
