Dr. Theresa Luu and Dr. Muralidhar Padala Join our Faculty

June 2010

Dr. Theresa Luu trained exclusively at Emory. She received her MD in 1999, did her general surgery residency from 1999-2004, her cardiothoracic surgery research and clinical fellowship from 2004-2005, and completed her cardiothoracic surgery residency in 2008. She then went into private practice with Wellstar Thoracic Surgery Associates, PC, in Marietta, GA. With her return to Emory as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, her primary work location will be Athens Regional Medical Center. Dr. Luu's overall research interest is minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery, and her clinical specialties are video assisted thoracic surgery and minimally invasive surgery in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.

Dr. Muralidhar Padala received an MS in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Bioengineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His doctoral research focused on using engineering techniques to improve surgical correction of mitral valve lesions. From 2008-2010 he was awarded the American Heart Association Pre-Doctoral Fellowship to study the failure mechanisms of mitral annuloplasty in patients with ischemic mitral regurgitation. In his work with Dr. Vinod Thourani and Dr. Jakob Vinten-Johansen at Emory University Hospital Midtown's Cardiothoracic Research Lab, Dr. Padala will focus on developing experimental models and engineering and animal models that can be used as test beds to study the pathogenesis of structural heart defects, to design surgical planning platforms, and to innovate technologies that translate scientific knowledge to clinical practice.
