Appointed chief of the division in September 2007, Dr. Sweeney came to Emory from the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine where he directed the division of general surgery, the department's Bariatric Surgery Program and the Michael E. DeBakey Minimally Invasive Surgery Center of Excellence. Prior to that, he served as chief of surgery at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center and director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Michigan.

Prior to Emory, Dr. Buchman was the director of Acute and Critical Care Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. He directs the Emory Center for Critical Care (ECCC), which is integrating ICUs throughout Emory Healthcare, bringing together clinicians and investigators from diverse disciplines to conduct research to define best clinical practices and inform public health policy. The center also houses Emory's training programs in critical care anesthesiology, surgical critical care, and pulmonary/medical critical care. Plans are being developed to sponsor critical care training for hospitalists, emergency medicine physicians, and neurologists.

Previously at the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center, Dr. Davis specializes in a variety of laparoscopic procedures and is interested in the development of minimally invasive surgical devices.

A luminary in the fields of vascular and abdominal trauma, Dr. Feliciano has received over 30 teaching awards; has edited six editions of Trauma, an essential textbook in the field; is the co-editor of Acute Care Surgery, the first textbook of its type; was appointed the first-ever community editor for the General Surgery Section of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Web Portal; and chairs the ACS Advisory Council for General Surgery.

Dr. Fink was chief of the surgical service at the Atlanta VA Medical Center from 1993-2003, is actively involved in studies involving assessment of surgical outcome, and has made sentinel contributions to the development of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.

Dr. Galloway directs Nutritional Metabolic Services at Emory University Hospital and has received multiple teaching and physician's awards.

A research nutritionist at the Emory Bariatric Center, Dr. Gletsu is investigating the pathophysiology of insulin resistance in severe obesity and hypertension.

Dr. Lin was the first surgeon in the U.S. to perform endoscopic plication for gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) in June 2004 at Emory University Hospital Midtown; was officially designated a Lap Band proctor in 2008, allowing him to certify surgeons in the minimally invasive procedure by observing them performing the technique; and directed the development of a single incision, laparoscopic technique for resection of colon cancer.

Dr. McClusky joined the division in 2008 after completing his minimally invasive surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic-Jacksonville. He also did his general surgery residency and an endosurgery fellowship at Emory. His clinical specialties include hernia surgery and treatment for gastrointestinal and digestive diseases, while his primary research pursuit is evaluating and refining simulation training for surgical skills development.

Dr. Sarmiento focuses on surgical treatment of metastatic liver disease, primary hepatic tumors, gallbladder cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, chronic pancreatitis and reconstruction of the bile duct. With Dr. Lin, Dr. Sarmiento has developed unique techniques for laparoscopic-assisted formal liver resections, such as the performance of laparoscopic hepatectomy though incisions that are much smaller than those of a standard open procedure.

Dr. Sharma did his endocrine surgery fellowship at Emory, specializes in such clinical areas as pancreatic endocrine tumors and gastrointestinal surgery and has a variety of research interests that include parathyroid hormone kinetics and parathyroid imaging techniques.

Dr. Srinivasan did her general surgery residency at Emory and specializes in open and laparoscopic GI surgery and hernia repair and the minimally invasive Lap Band system for weight management.

Dr. Webb, chief of general surgery at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, specializes in colorectal, endocrine and laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. Weber's distinguished career includes over 25 years of investigations and contributions to the field of diabetes research, including being the first diabetes investigator to examine both cross-species islet transplantation and the protective encapsulation of transplanted islets.
