Year Joined Emory as a Faculty Member

In collaboration with the Department of Transfusion Medicine, Dr. Dente led the four-year process of developing and implementing the massive transfusion protocol now in place at the level I trauma center of Grady Memorial Hospital.

In 2012, Dr. Dente was named PI of a Department of Defense-funded pilot wound closure study based at Grady. The study is the first of its kind in the country at a civilian medical center, and is developing a predictive system for wound closure by identifying chemical and molecular biomarkers in informed consent-derived tissue and fluid samples that appear to forecast successful closure. In 2014, the Defense Health Program of the DoD launched the Surgical Critical Care Initiative (SC2i) to translate decision-making tools it had developed for the battlefield to civilian critical care. The participating centers are Emory University School of Medicine, Duke University School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC), Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and DecisionQ Corporation. These centers must also share any revisions back to the DoD so that it may further refine battlefield procedures. Timothy Buchman, director of the Emory Critical Care Center, is the Emory-based PI, and Dr. Dente is the lead site investigator at Grady’s trauma center.

Dr. Dente also teaches American College of Surgeons-sponsored courses in surgeon-performed ultrasound, Advanced Trauma Life Support, and Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposures in Trauma (ASSET).
