Year Joined Emory as a Faculty Member

When Dr. Singh was appointed medical director of the Emory Bariatric Center in 2012, he instituted a variety of improvements to the service, including the creation of a streamlined, evidence-based pre-operative process to reduce unnecessary pre-op testing, improve efficiency of patients progressing through the pre-op bariatric surgery process, and reduce post-operative complications; instituted universal screening for obstructive sleep apnea, smoking cessation, and diabetic control in bariatric pre-surgical patients to optimize post-op results; created medical student and resident clinical rotations to improve trainee education in the field of obesity medicine; and converted all Bariatric Center charting from paper to electronic medical records. In 2015, he designed and organized a comprehensive non-surgical, medical weight loss and management program called Path2Health, a six-month program that provides patients with tools to work towards their ideal body weight and optimize their health.

Currently, Dr. Singh is a co-investigator with collaborators from radiology and neuropsychology on a pilot study that is seeking to better understand brain structural and functional alterations in morbidly obese patients measured by MRI, and the effects of substantial weight loss from bariatric surgery on the brain. The project's goal is to provide a potential link to mechanisms by which obesity can result in dementia and how weight loss through a variety of available treatments can benefit brain health.
